Purge the Spurge + Strive For 5

Education Campaign

Campaign Objective:

To further support the Wye to Wongarra Landcare Group’s momentum on raising awareness of Sea Spurge in our region, this joint initiative with the Kennett Community Action Group and GORCAPA, aims to create continued awareness and community participation to break the cycle of sea spurge infestations, and improve the health of our dunes for both native flora and wildlife so they can flourish.

Benefits:

  • Raises awareness of the weed

  • Not only removes an invasive weed species, but improves conditions for native flora and wildlife to flourish

  • Accessible for people to do in their own time

  • Supports maintenance of sites that have had targeted working bees

  • The initiative allows people to proactively participate in something that has a positive outcome for our coastline

  • Initiative can be replicated in other locations as focus is moved depending on the need to maintain an area

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will GORCAPA be emptying the bins?

The GORCAPA team will be regularly checking and emptying the bins based on their schedule. These checks will increase as peak holiday times occur to make sure there is room in the bins to keep the momentum going.

What if I am pulling out large volumes of the weed, where do I put it?

We have a number of amazing ‘weed warriors’ that are really making a dent in the spurge coverage. Please keep leaving the vegetation at the front of the walking track adjacent to the KR precinct entrance as has been occurring to date.

Once a site has the spurge removed on the foreshore, what happens with the bins?

There are a number of sites around Kennett River (extending from back beach to dog beach) that need focus. As areas are targeted, the bins will be moved to new locations. The community will be updated on locations as they change via local social channels.

Sea Spurge has a sap doesn’t it?

Yes, sea spurge does have a sap that is an irritant to eyes and skin. Please ensure when you are removing the weed, you wear long pants, long sleeves and gloves. You can also wear eye protection.

We would like to implement this in our community, are we able to chat further about your program?

Great! The only way to tackle this weed is through education and wider community involvement. If you would like to chat further about what we have implemented, please feel free to contact us here.
