Kennett River Riparian Zone Revegetation

On July 13th, the Kennett Community Action Group launched a community-led initiative to actively restore our riverbank, aiming to increase biodiversity and natural habitat over the next 3 years, and to help minimise the impacts of tourism to local wildlife.

Community come together with agencies to make a lasting difference to this precious ecosystem;

  • 18 resident green thumbs

  • 4 GORCAPA superstars

  • 555 plants

  • 555 tree guards

  • 1655 tree stakes

All the plants are endemic to this area. They were selected by GORCAPA, the seed was collected and propagated by (SOLN) the Southern Otway Landcare Networks Shrub Club Team, and privately funded by the Kennett Community Action Group.

The area underwent a cultural heritage induction and the holes were pre-dug to ensure everything was ready for a big day of planting.

The mulching preparation works alone, have resulted in two new bird sightings in this area.

To the GORCAPA team who shared their expertise, and to the passionate residents who signed up as soon as they heard about this project… Thank you.

It was the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning immersed in nature and friendship, building a legacy for generations to come.

Our commitment doesn’t stop here; taking the citizen science approach, these works will be supported by an ongoing community monitoring program of plant health, weed management and wildlife observation with Phase 2 plans already in place for 2025.
