Beat the Sweet Pittosporum
2024 Coastcare Victoria Community Grant - Successful

In collaboration with Kennett River community members and GORCAPA, earlier on in the year, the Southern Otway Landcare Network (SOLN) applied for a 2024 Coastcare Victoria Community Grant and we are pleased to say that this grant was successful!

The project overview is;

The Kennett River community loves their coastline and environment. They want to proactively contribute in any way they can to collaborate with agencies and Traditional Owners on managing and improving the area, so future generations will benefit.

This project aims to remove Sweet Pittosporum at Point Hawdon - by eliminating this significant weed species, and replanting natives. It encourages an increase of biodiversity and habitat, and reduces the spread of the weed into the Otways. To leverage the community's enthusiasm, this project provides the opportunity for people to volunteer in making an on ground difference whilst increasing awareness and education through participation.

Addressing these project categories;

  • Coastal or marine habitat preservation or rehabilitation

  • Community engagement or education

  • Control of weeds and pest animals

  • Revegetation

  • Strengthening of Traditional Owner Self Determination

So where to from here?

There are a number of activities that will be undertaken for this grant to ensure the Sweet Pittosporum is removed from Point Hawdon, and that everyone has the opportunity to learn more, and to participate in activities that make a positive social and environmental impact to our community.

Coming up;

  • Traditional Owner Engagement

    Engaging with Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation (EMAC) for their guidance in management of the weed species as custodians of our lands.

  • Community Conversation

    Connecting with agencies to learn about the weed, how to identify it, treat it, and alternative species to plant at home.

  • Working Bee (Private Property)

    Identifying opportunities on private property in Kennett River that has Sweet Pittosporum growing and as a community removing these plants and replacing with native species.

During this project, a set of Frequently Asked Questions will be developed to ensure we capture community interest in this weed and impart that knowledge.

This project forms part of the wider Kennett Community Action Group Weed Management Strategy.
